Which Volvo Luxury SUV Is Right For You?

Compare New Volvo Luxury SUVs

Offering a seamless blend of premium luxury and practical versatility, Volvo SUVs are among the most well-rounded in their respective segments. They're spacious and well-equipped, with abundant amenities, standard safety features, and available hybrid and electric powertrains-making them an ideal road companion for family getaways, weekend errands, or your Fort Wayne commute. And with the automaker's signature Scandinavian design and craftsmanship, Volvo SUVs are some of the most compelling models the industry has to offer.

Of course, different drivers have different specifications; there's no one-size-fits-all solution. But with numerous models and configurations to choose from, you can find a Volvo SUV for almost every need, taste, and lifestyle. Here's an overview of the similarities and differences in Volvo's SUV lineup.

Volvo SUVs: Standard Features

While the Volvo C40, XC40, XC60, and XC90 offer unique experiences suited to different needs and preferences, a few attributes are common to all Volvo SUVs. For example, all models feature a vivid 9.0-inch touchscreen with intuitive cabin controls and smartphone integration via Android Automotive OS (or Android Auto, depending on model) and Apple CarPlay. Additionally, every Volvo comes standard with IntelliSafe advanced safety features and driver-assistance technologies, including:

  • Volvo City Safety (forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking)
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™ )
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • Road Sign Information
  • Steering-adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams

Which Volvo SUV is Right for You?

Volvo XC40

If you're shopping for a luxury SUV with useful cargo space but need something maneuverable for Auburn or Huntington, IL commutes, the Volvo XC40 is an excellent choice. This subcompact crossover offers athletic handling and a city-friendly footprint well-suited to navigating busy streets and crowded parking lots. And while it may be Volvo's smallest model, the XC40's diminutive dimensions belie a surprisingly spacious cabin with comfortable accommodations for up to five passengers and versatile storage options. The Volvo XC40 is also generously equipped with standard amenities like leather upholstery, proximity entry, a power driver's seat, and a 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display.

The XC40 offers a choice of two gasoline engines (T4, T5), as well as an available pure-electric powertrain (Recharge Twin-see below).

Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge Twin

For Fort Wayne drivers seeking exhilarating performance with zero tailpipe emissions, Volvo offers the XC40 and C40 Recharge pure-electric luxury crossovers. Electric motors on each axle combine to deliver 402 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of near-instant torque, propelling the XC40 and C40 Recharge Twin to 60 mph from a standstill in under 4.7 seconds. A 75-kWh battery pack provides up to 223 miles (EPA estimate) of range and can be fully charged overnight (~8 hours) with Level 2 (220V) home charging equipment. At 150-kW DC fast-charging stations, like those found at highway rest stops, the battery can charge 80% in just 40 minutes.

In addition to being more environmentally friendly, pure-electric vehicles also offer significantly reduced ownership costs. Electricity costs less per mile than gasoline, and permanently sealed EV motors don't require many standard maintenance items like oil changes.

A few style details differentiate the XC40 Recharge Twin from the standard XC40. The C40 Recharge sports a sleek fastback design with unique fascia and lighting elements.

Volvo XC60

If you need something a little roomier while maintaining a convenient physical footprint, then consider the Volvo XC60. This compact luxury SUV leverages its longer length for more legroom and larger cargo capacity. It also adds more amenities to the standard features list, including dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic moonroof, a hands-free liftgate, and more. It's a great choice for smaller families or anyone seeking extra versatility for their daily drives.

New for the XC60, Volvo has replaced the previous T5 (turbocharged) and T6 (turbo and supercharged) powertrains with B5 and B6 mild-hybrid (MHEV) versions. The B5 and B6 powertrains feature a 48-volt electric motor that captures energy typically lost during deceleration (regenerative braking). The energy is stored in a small battery and redeployed to assist the engine during ignition and stop-starts, resulting in smoother acceleration, lower emissions, and improved efficiency.

The XC60 is also available with the Recharge plug-in hybrid powertrain, which boosts performance and efficiency and enables up to 19 miles of electric-only driving.

Volvo XC90

For drivers seeking more space and seatbelts for their larger Fort Wayne family, there's Volvo's flagship model, the XC90. This midsize three-row luxury SUV offers ample accommodations for seven passengers and a maximum cargo area of 85.7 cubic feet. If you don't need the extra seat, an available six-seat configuration with second-row captain's chairs enhances the feeling of spaciousness and provides easier access to the third row. The Volvo XC90 is available with the T5, T6, or Recharge powertrain and includes even more standard features like four-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging, and Volvo's Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system with adaptive cruise control and lane-centering.
